中米・メキシコ南部沖で、日本時間7月17日午後11時49分頃にマグニチュード7.4を観測する地震が発生しました。USGS（米地質調査所）によると、震源地はチワワ州のアキレス・セルダンの南西48km付近（メキシコの主要な太平洋港湾都市兼漁業町プエルト・マデロ沖）で、地震の深さは15.2kmと推定されています。
USGSは、震源地から300km以内で「TSUNAMI THREAT（海岸や海域にいる人々に危険が及ぶ可能性があることを知らせる、津波に関する一般的な警告・警戒レベルを指す）を発表しています。
気象庁は、この地震による日本への津波の影響はないと発表しています。
